Crane – Truck Mounted Hiab Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)

SWMS Overview

The Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for Truck-Mounted Hiab Cranes outlines the procedures and control measures required for safely operating vehicle-mounted hydraulic cranes for loading, unloading, and material placement on residential, commercial, and industrial sites in Australia. It aligns with Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, the Managing Risks of Plant in the Workplace Code of Practice, and relevant Australian Standards (e.g. AS 2550.11 & AS 1418 series).

Key focus areas include conducting a site-specific risk assessment to identify ground stability, overhead hazards (such as powerlines), and safe traffic and pedestrian management around the work area. It highlights the importance of pre-start inspections of the crane, outriggers, hydraulic systems, and lifting accessories, ensuring only licensed and competent operators perform Hiab operations.

This SWMS also details safe lifting practices, including correct sling and lifting gear selection, maintaining communication between the operator and dogman/spotter, and ensuring loads remain within the crane’s rated capacity. It covers setting up exclusion zones, securing loads for transport, and implementing emergency procedures in case of hydraulic failure, uncontrolled movements, or dropped loads.

By following this SWMS, workers can significantly reduce the risks of crane instability, load shift, collisions, entrapment, and mechanical failure, ensuring truck-mounted Hiab crane operations are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with WHS requirements.
