Lead Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) 

SWMS Overview 

The Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for Working with Lead outlines the procedures and control measures required to safely handle, remove, or disturb materials containing lead on residential, commercial, and industrial sites in Australia. It ensures compliance with Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, the Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace Code of Practice, and relevant environmental regulations.

Key focus areas include conducting a site-specific risk assessment to identify lead-containing materials such as paint, dust, or contaminated soil, and implementing appropriate containment methods to prevent airborne contamination. It highlights the requirement for suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) including respiratory protection, disposable coveralls, gloves, and eye protection, as well as hygiene controls such as dedicated wash stations and decontamination procedures.
