SWMS Overview 

The Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for Proving De‑Energised outlines the mandatory safety steps and controls required to verify that electrical equipment, circuits, or installations are isolated and safe to work on. This SWMS ensures compliance with Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, the Electricity Supply (Safety and Network Management) Regulation, and relevant standards such as AS/NZS 4836 – Safe Working on or near Low‑Voltage Electrical Installations.

Key focus areas include obtaining appropriate isolation permits, applying lockout/tagout devices, and maintaining accurate documentation of all isolations. It details the requirement to use an approved and tested voltage detector on a known live source before and after proving de‑energisation, in line with the “Test Before You Touch” principle.
