Scaffolds & Temporary Edge Protection  Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)

SWMS Overview

The Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for Scaffolding and Temporary Edge Protection provides a systematic approach to managing risks associated with working at heights, erecting, altering, and dismantling scaffolds, and installing edge protection on residential, commercial, and industrial sites in Australia. It ensures compliance with Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, the National Code of Practice for Scaffolding, and relevant Australian Standards (e.g. AS/NZS 1576 & AS/NZS 4576).

Key focus areas include conducting site-specific risk assessments before scaffold erection, verifying ground conditions and load-bearing capacities, and ensuring only licensed and competent scaffolders perform high-risk work. It outlines the correct use of fall protection systems, safe installation of guardrails, toe boards, and mesh, as well as maintaining safe access points and exclusion zones during erection or dismantling.

The SWMS also emphasises routine inspections of scaffolds for stability, secure connections, and damage, ensuring tagging systems are used to indicate scaffold status. For temporary edge protection, it details the selection of appropriate systems (e.g. fixed rails, temporary barriers), their correct installation, and ongoing monitoring to prevent falls from open edges.

Implementing this SWMS reduces the likelihood of falls, falling objects, structural failures, and unauthorised access. It promotes a safe working environment, safeguards workers and the public, and ensures all scaffolding and edge protection work is undertaken to the highest safety and compliance standards.
