Vehicle Loading Crane (VLC) Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) 

SWMS Overview 

The Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for Vehicle Loading Cranes (VLCs) details the procedures and control measures required to safely load, unload, and position materials using truck-mounted cranes on residential, commercial, civil, and industrial sites in Australia. It ensures compliance with Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, the Managing Risks of Plant in the Workplace Code of Practice, and relevant Australian Standards (e.g. AS 2550.11 & AS 1418).

Key focus areas include conducting a site-specific risk assessment to identify ground stability, overhead obstructions, and exclusion zones before crane operation. It highlights the need for pre-operational inspections of the crane, outriggers, lifting gear, and safety devices, as well as ensuring only trained, licensed, and competent personnel operate the VLC.
