General Trade Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)

SWMS Overview

The Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for General Trade Activities provides a structured framework for identifying, assessing, and controlling risks associated with a broad range of construction, maintenance, and installation tasks carried out on residential, commercial, and industrial sites in Australia. It applies to licensed tradespeople, apprentices, and contractors, ensuring their work aligns with current Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation and industry best practices.

Key focus areas include conducting pre-start site inspections, isolating services before commencing work, safe use of hand and power tools, managing risks from working at heights or in confined spaces, and implementing appropriate traffic and pedestrian controls. It emphasises the correct selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe manual handling techniques, electrical safety, and procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous substances.

This SWMS also outlines emergency response measures, incident reporting protocols, and ongoing consultation with site supervisors to maintain a safe working environment. By implementing these controls, workers can minimise the likelihood of injury, property damage, or environmental harm while ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and in full compliance with WHS requirements.
